90 percent of ‘vigilantes’ are from the Zongos – Alhaji Sani

An opinion leader of Yalwa Zongo, one of the Zongo communities in Kumasi, Alhaji Sani, has said more than 90 percent of vigilante groups in the country are recruited from the Zongo communities, a development which he described as very worrying to Zongo leaders.

The emergence of these vigilante groups who are seen as ‘symbols of political disruptions’ among others seems to deepen some negative perception about Zongo youths, of the country.

It is in this regard that, Alhaji Sani said, the leadership of the Zongo communities are in support of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s effort to disband and outlaw all vigilante groups in the country. This he noted will at least bring them some peace of mind.

He observed that contrary to these perceptions, Zongo youths are very hardworking. He opined that the people of Yalwa Zongo, in the Subin Constituency, are, therefore, in support of those who genuinely desire to help create job opportunities for the youths.

Alhaji Sani made these remarks when an aspiring Member of Parliament for the Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Villey Acheampong, donated some food items to the Babul Salam Mosque at Yalwa Zongo, in Kumasi.

The aspiring MP, Mr. Acheampong, said in the spirit of supporting the prayer offerings of the Muslim community for the good of the country and all mankind, in this Ramadan period, he considered it selfless to offer something to the Babul Salam Mosque.

He also appealed to the Zongo youths to let the peace that has existed since the commencement of the fasting to continue while urging them to also desist from being used by any corrupt-minded politician to pursue any bad agenda.

Receiving the items, which included bags of sugar, rice, bread, water, cartons of milk, plastic water dispenser and sachets of water, other leaders at the Babul Salam Mosque said Allah will bless anyone who gifts his children with even a tin of milk in this period of fasting.

They, therefore, encouraged Mr. Acheampong that the blessings of Allah will be upon him in all his endeavors.
