Jane Hairston was shot at her northeast Columbus home in Ohio after her father mistakingly identified her as a burglar. The accidental shooting took place around 4:30 am on Wednesday, shortly after the parent of the 16-year-old heard a strange noise coming from the family’s garage.
In the 911 call that followed, Jane’s mother was understandably shaken as she pleaded with the dispatcher to send medical help while also attempting to explain her husband’s mishap.
“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” said the mother. “She was in our garage, and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”
She continued by saying she believed her daughter had been shot in the chest. The police arrived minutes after the call, and Jane Hairston was transferred to a primary care hospital called Mount Carmel East. She was pronounced dead about an hour later.
As of now, no police charges have been filed, but the case has been sent to the Franklin County prosecutor’s office for reevaluation.
