Johnny Depp is one of the best actors of our generation. His dedication to his roles gives us some of the most iconic characters in movie history. From Captain Jack Sparrow to Edward Scissorhands and most recently, Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series, his performances just keep blowing us away. So diehard fans of the actor decided to revisit his classic films and they found quite a lot of interesting details in Johnny Depp movies.

Let’s take a look at these interesting hidden details in Johnny Depp movies that you might have missed. Do you have the sharp eyes to spot them all?

1. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

In the movie Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), there was a scene where Captain Jack Sparrow was singing a little song about a jar of dirt. Turned out the whole “I’ve got a jar of dirt” song was completely unscripted and Johnny Depp just randomly came up with it. That explained why the other actors looked so surprised when he sang it.

2. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

In The Curse Of The Black Pearl, Depp kept losing his hats and throwing them overboard. He lost about ten leather hats and the costume designers had enough of this. So they decided to make most of his hats in this movie out of rubber instead of leather. That’s why Jack’s hats float instead of sink.

3. Pirates Of The Caribbean Series

Throughout the movies in the franchise, we can spot a red spot on Jack Sparrow’s jaw. It gets more noticeable in each film and it’s actually supposed to be syphilis. This is a joke between Depp and the makeup department.

4. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

If you paid close attention to Jack’s outfit in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), you would notice he had his mother’s shrunken head tied to his belt. This detail first appeared in POTC: At The World’s End (2007).

5. Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp convinced Winona Ryder to star alongside him in Edward Scissorhands. Despite it being the first collaboration between him and director Tim Burton, Depp could see that the film had great potential. Winona Ryder agreed and quit her part in The Godfather: Part III to star with Depp.

6. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (2005)

The squirrel scene in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (2005) was real squirrels. The crew didn’t use CGI. They had 40 real squirrels trained by Micheal Alexander and the team in 19 weeks. Their goal was to teach the squirrels to sit on a stool and crack nuts and drop them onto conveyor belts.

7. Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Alice In Wonderland was set in the Victorian era, which explained why the mad hatter was a little bit crazy. Hatmakers at that time worked with mercury, which was an extremely dangerous and toxic metal that could kill neurons and gave you chronic intoxication. This led to behavioral alterations, tremors, and erethism.

8. Dark Shadows

Johnny Depp played the role of a vampire in the 2012 movie Dark Shadows. The crew made sure to digitally remove every instance of a reflection or blinking for his character.

9. Sleepy Hollow

After Sleepy Hollow was complete, the one-eyed horse named Goldeneye in the movie was sent to auction. Upon hearing this news, Depp showed up at the auction, put in the highest bid, and took the horse home with him.

10. Sweeney Todd

Depp is a cold-blooded murderer in Sweeney Todd who disguises himself as a barber. He strops his straight razor backward with the edge advance of the spine. This dulls the razor and makes his murders much more painful for the victims.

11. Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

The effect of blood rushing to the ceiling during the demise of Johnny Depp’s character was created by using an upside-down set. The blood was actually spilling onto the floor. Director Wes Craven and Jacques Haitkin filmed the scene by strapping themselves to the wall in race car seats.

12. 21 Jump Street

In 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp played a character known as DB. This was a reference to Donnie Brasco where Johnny Depp went undercover in a criminal organization.

13. Rango

There was a scene in the movie where Rango slammed into “Hunter s. Thompson’s” windshield. Depp played a character named Thompson in the 1998 movie Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. Hunter’s only line in the movie was “There’s another one,” possibly referring to the bats he hallucinated in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.

14. The Lone Ranger

Depp’s saddle slipped and he fell off the side while he was being filmed riding his horse. The poor actor was dragged for several feet before the horse was stopped.

15. Black Mass

This might be a little bit of a stretch, but some fans pointed out that in Secret Window, Depp’s character Mort narrated the perfect ending to his story and said “Her death will be a mystery, even to me.”

In Black Mass, during the Christmas dinner at Jimmy’s brother’s house, John Connolly said to Whitey Bulger: “I don’t know how your brother does it, the 9 kids.” Whitey responded, “It’s a mystery, even to me.” This could be a way Depp paid homage to Secret Window as he played both Mort and Whitey.
